College Democrats Meeting Minutes 10/22/09

Meeting was called to order at 7:05

The Die-in will take place this Monday near the clock tower, from 10:45-11:00. You may either come to lie on the ground and act dead, or you may stand and hold signs about health care. It may rain, but there will be a tarp available.

The College Democrats will be taking a trip to Madison on Friday, November 6th. We will leave at 8 am. We will be taking a tour of the capitol, as well as Assemblywoman Jennifer Shilling's office, and the DPW's office. Then we will have a couple of hours on State Street, before going to a showing of "Capitalism: A Love Story".
A sign up sheet was passed around for members who are interested in going on this trip.
If you would still like to go, but did not sign up, please contact Justin Fons or Liz Guck.

Treasurer Katie Norton gave her treasurer's report.

The Western Wisconsin Caucus will be Friday, November 13th. This is a social event between the River Falls, Eau Claire, and La Crosse College Dems. This event will take place in River Falls. A sign up sheet was passed around for those who may be interested in attending.

The Fall Dinner is this Saturday, October 24th at the Concordia Ball Room. The College Dems have the opportunity to set up the event and get into the dinner for free. Otherwise tickets for students are $15. This is the La Crosse County Democratic party's biggest fundraiser of the year. Cocktail hour starts at 5pm and dinner is at 6:00.

Feingold House Party 6:30 on Thursday November 19th, 138 Wimberly. This event is free to students, and $25 for the community. Russ Feingold will be making a conference call to all house parties at 7:00. This event will be in place of our regular meeting that week.

There will be a Feingold Canvass on Saturday, November 7th. There may be groups going out at 10am and 12pm. Canvassers will be asking the community if they support the public option. The canvass will be organized out of room 258 Cartwright. Inexperienced canvassers will be trained and sent out with more experienced people.

The Progressives are collecting used cell phones to raise funds for a trip they will be taking next year. They will be collecting them the first week in November.

There are still opportunities to sign up to become a member of College Democrats. At each meeting there will be info sheets. Dues are $7 for a semester and $10 for the year.

College Democrats Meeting Minutes 10-15-09

Meeting was called to order at 7:06

Co-chair Liz talked about the Madison trip. The trip is set for Friday, November 6th. We will be leaving at 8 in the morning and will be taking a tour of the capital. We will stop stop in at Jennifer Shilling's office, and speak either to her or to her staffers, and we will also stop by the DPW (Democratic Party of Wisconsin. We will then spend a couple free hours downtown and finish up by going to see "Capitalism: A Love Story" in the evening. If any members need Liz or Justin to speak to teachers, just contact them and let them know.

Justin brought up that there will be a VAN (Voter Activation Network)training on Tuesday October 20th at 6pm. VAN is a database of info about voters that aids us in knowing who to reach out to during a campaign. If you are planning on working on any upcoming campaigns, this is a very important event for you to attend. We will be meeting at 150 Murphy Library, and the meeting should last until about 8pm.

Justin also said that there will a Steering Committee Meeting for Russ Feingold "s campaign on Wednesday, October 21st in 337 Cartwright . This is a good way to find out what's going on with the Feingold campaign and see what our community will be doing. This meeting should last about an hour.

Andrew Londre talked about his new event: A Die In that will take place on October 26th from 10:45am to 11:00am. Participants will lay "dead" either around the Clock tower, in front of Wittich field. A chalking will take place the night before to draw the outlines of dead people around the Clock Tower. More times to "die" during that day may be added.

Pablo Ruiz , Co-chair of the LCDP was at the meeting. He said the next LCDP meeting will take place on Monday, October 19th at the Ho Chunk 3 Rivers House at 7pm. Bill Bruckmiller will be speaking at this meeting. If you wish to sign up to be a member of LCDP then you can do so at this meeting or at the Fall Dinner. If you sign up then you will still be considered a member through 2010.

• The Fall Dinner is LCDP's biggest fundraiser. It takes place at the Concordia Ballroom. Cocktail hour begins at 5pm and dinner will be served at 6. Those College Democrats who offer to help set up and take down the event will get in free, otherwise tickets are $15. Set up time will begin in the early afternoon
o A phone bank will take place on Sunday to call members of the LCDP to remind them of the Fall Dinner. We will call to see if they're coming, ask if they wish to sponsor the event or make a contribution to the organization. This will be held at Pablo's house on Sunday from 6-8pm. A dinner will be served to all volunteered.

Our Outreach Coordinator, Jenny Luedke gave her Issue of the Week presentation.

A canvass for Russ Feingold will be held on October 7th at 10:30am. This canvass will be organized out of 258 Cartwright. Please show up to help knock on doors. If you have no canvassing experience you will be trained and sent out with a more experienced canvasser.

Students for Choice is doing Choice Monologues. A sign up sheet was passed around for those who wish to participate. If you are interested please contact Liz Ward. For those wishing to attend Student for Choice meetings, they are held at 5:30 on Tuesday in 228 Graff Main Hall.

On Sunday a demonstration for Stand Up Against Poverty will take place at 5:30 on the entire demonstration will take about 5 mins… not sure on all details for this…

UW-L College Democrats Meeting Minutes 9-24-09

Meeting was called to order at 7:08

The co-chair of The Progressives came to our meeting to announce that Saturday September 26th is National Public Lands Day.

Volunteers will be meeting at 3:00 at the clock tower to clean up the campus. A Pot luck dinner for the volunteers will be at 6:00pm.

She also mentioned that the progressives have begun making their annual Green is Sexy calendars. Anyone who wants to can sign up to help organize the calendar or model in it. A signup sheet was sent around for those who want information on how to be a part of this.

Vice Chair Jesse Campo introduced the new punch card system.

If you sign up and/or pay dues to become a member of College Democrats you will receive a punch card. You will receive punches for showing up to meetings and volunteering at events organized by the College Dems. 14 punches will get you a soon to be determined prize.

Please note that members who are new to College Democrats this semester do not have to pay dues, but returning members must pay their dues to become a member and receive their punch cards. Dues are $7 for one semester, or $10 for two semesters.

The No Coal Coalition is having a Demonstration against the burning of coal on campus. This demonstration will take place at 3:00pm on Tuesday, September 29th at the coal plant on campus. The last 15 minutes of the demonstration will be used to allow students to speak. Please contact Liz Ward if you would wish to speak.

A signup sheet passed around for those who would like to be a part of our Relay for Life team, headed by Kat Dellenbach.

Saturday, September 26th is the Oktoberfest parade.

Andrew Londre asked four people to make 25 phone calls to democrats to ask them to walk in the parade. These phone calls must be made by tomorrow morning. Graham Clumpner, Kat Dellenbach, Jonathan Ringdahl, Armas and Katie Norton signed up to do this.

We also need members to walk in the parade. We will be meeting on the corner of Gillette and Clinton St, at 9:30am.

The LCDP Fall Dinner takes place on Saturday, October 24th in the Concordia Ballroom.

This event is the last opportunity to sign up and pay to be a member of La Crosse County Democratic Party before the November executive board election. Memberships paid in October are in effect for the remainder of the calendar year plus the next full calendar year. We will also need volunteers to help set up for the fall dinner earlier in the day on Oct. 24th. The exact time of the set up is yet to be determined.

Graham Clumpner presented the Issue of the Week on the War in Afghanistan.

Next week's Issue of the Week will be Health Care Reform, presented by Andrew Londre.

Andrew Londre has organized a showing of Sicko on October 9th, in the Graff Main Hall Auditorium at 5pm. There will be forum on health care reform after the movie.


The College Democrats of Wisconsin (CDW) has asked that our College Dems chapter create 3 Caucuses, for Diversity, LGBT, Women.

TJ O'Connor will be heading up diversity and LGBT Caucuses.

It is yet to be determined who will run the Women's Caucus, however Katherine Dellenbach and Marisa Montelibano expressed interest in forming a committee. See either of them for more information.

There will be no College Democrats meeting on October 8th, so members can go and see I <3 Female Orgasm that day at 7pm in Valhalla. There will also be no meeting on October 29th.

The first meeting of Students for Choice will be on Tuesday, Oct 6th at 5:30 in room 257 Cartwright.

College Democrats Meeting Minutes 9/17/09

The meeting was called to order at 7:06

Chair, Justin Fons, welcomed all returning members and new comers to what was our second meeting of the year.

Matt Ullsvik announced that Ron Kind is holding several community service projects over the next few weeks. The event is The Wafer Food Fair at 403 Causeway Blvd. It will go from 9am to 12:30pm on Saturday. He also mentioned the Oktoberfest parade, in which Democrats of La Crosse will be walking.

A sign up sheet was passed around which asked for each person to leave their email and
phone number as a way to keep in touch with our members.

Co-chair Liz Guck talked about our members visiting 100 level classrooms in order to inform new students about the College Dems. A sign up sheet was passed around for those who wish to be a part of helping spread the word about our club.

Liz also spoke about taking a trip to the Capitol in Madison to take a tour and possible meet some legislators. The trip is tentatively set for the first or second weekend of November, preferably on a Friday afternoon.

A canvass for Senator Feingold is taking place this Saturday, beginning at 9am. The canvass will be organized out of room 337 in Cartwright. Brad Konkel is the head organizer of this canvass. If you cannot make it at 9, you may show up later, we will be sending out new groups of canvassers throughout the afternoon. If you are new to canvassing, you will be trained before going out, and you will be sent out with people who are experienced in canvassing.

The La Crosse County Democratic Party is having a meeting at the Ho-Chunk 3 Rivers House on Monday, Sept. 21 at 7pm. If you are not a member of the LCDP and you would like to be, this meeting will give you the chance to sign up and pay dues in order to become a member. (Dues are $10 for students for 1 year). Becoming a member allows you to vote on things at the LCDP meetings.

The Western Wisconsin Caucus is coming up this year, and there was a discussion on which weekend to have this Caucus. This event takes place in Eau Claire and involves the La Crosse, Eau Claire and River Falls College Democrats getting together and having a good time. There are tentative dates set for either Friday the 16th or the 23rd. We will keep you posted when the official date has been decided on.

Jesse Campo brought up the fact that will be collecting dues for returning members, in order to gain revenue for our chapter. If you are new to the club this semester, then you will not be charged any money. The dues are 7 dollars for one semester and 10 for two semesters.

We are also beginning a Punch Card program for your members. Punch card will be given out to new members, and to returning members once they've paid their dues. Punches will be awarded for those who volunteer for campaigns or show up for meetings and other things that aid the College Dems. A certain number of punches will win you chances at prizes, such as limited edition Obama posters or Obama t-shirts.

Our Outreach Coordinator, Jenny Luedke told the group about an Ice Cream Social that will be happening next week during our regular meeting time (7pm) in our regular meeting room (340 Cartwright). We will be charging $1 a scoop.

The movie SICKO will be playing in Graff Main Hall Auditorium on October 9th at 5pm. A guest speaker will speak on health care reform after the movie. Please show up to learn more about our current health care system and participate in a discussion about what can be done to fix it.

The Relay for Life is in February and it was suggested that we get a group together. Groups must be within 10-15 members and teams must be formed by October 20th. This would be a great way to get our name out there and do something good for the community. If you are interested, email Kat Dellenbach.

At 3:00 on Tuesday, September 29th, a group will be meeting at the Coal Plant on Campus to state their opposition to the burning of coal at UW-L. Meetings are also being held at 3:30 on Thursdays. For more information contact NoCoalCoalition@gmail.com

This year we will be continuing our Issue of the Week, in which one member per week will get up and do a small presentation on the political topic of their choice. Next week Graham will be presenting on the war in Afghanistan.
